F1 and Formula E races cancelled due to Coronavirus

Sporting events are cancelled or postponed as a result of Covid-19.

Coronavirus disease 2019 – COVID-19 to its friends – hasn’t racked up a bodycount just like the influenza epidemic of 1918, but during this much more globalized world, it’s still causing quite degree of havoc. There are now more than 71,000 confirmed cases that have been reported thus far, and fears of that number growing have resulted in the postponement or cancellation of huge public events both in China and many other countries. Last week we learned that Mobile World Congress, an annual tradeshow in Spain, won’t happen in 2020 – now we will start adding auto shows thereto list.

On Monday, it is confirmed that the Beijing auto show, which was scheduled for April of this year, will also be postponed until the coronavirus crisis is over. Consistent with Autocar, rumors that the show would be cancelled or postponed had been circulating for every week, with no official response so far.

Last week, the promoters of the Chinese Grand Prix – a Formula One race scheduled to be held in Shanghai on April 19 – successfully petitioned the sport’s organizing body FIA and Formula One to postpone the event until an as-yet-undecided date toward the top of the 2020 Formula One season. Although there’s no official word on the inaugural Vietnam Grand Prix, set for April 5, some within the sport are concerned about attending that race in Asia also.

Similarly, the Chinese round of the Formula E series will not happen as planned in Sanya on March 21 – like the Chinese Grand Prix, it seems the plan is to reschedule the race, but nobody is making concrete plans while the epidemic still rages. Choosing new dates might prove tricky for both series. Formula One’s calendar for 2020 is the busiest since it began in 1950, with 22 races scheduled to be held between March 15 and November 29. Formula E could also be in a good tougher spot – its calendar ends with a pair of races in London on July 25 and 26, although the series has mooted the thought of creating the NY ePrix – planned for earlier in July – into a double-header also.
